the “core”

I followed a trail of articles written by Brenda Brathwaite and they were all helpful and easy to read, but this one line stood out to me and I’m keeping it here for later, because it’s essential.

Every game must start with one core theme/idea – whatever you want to call it. It has one purpose. For racing games, that’s crossing the finish line first. For RPG’s, it’s often the main character developing and growing as a person, or the defeating of a particular evil. But what is most important is that “every single feature and system in the game must make the core stronger or be necessary for it to exist in the first place.”

And don’t you forget it.
